Oil and Water do not mix
“Oil and Water don’t mix” Well thats what we’re told…. These abstracts are experiments using mixtures of water based acrylics and oil paint. The results a little unpredictable but beautiful none the less. It serves as a metaphor for life, when you attempt something that conventional wisdom say “no” but you do it anyway, and beautiful things are born.
Metamorphosis
Part of a series of paintings about change, in two parts. Part 1, the destructive, subtractive nature of change and decay. A subtractive technique just leaves a trace of the former image on the canvas. The process is akin to washing your soul, pairing down ur life and possessions. Leaving gaps but keeping the essence. and part 2 the the gradual building back up.
Sensorial Criterion
Highly figured and layered abstract on gallery wrapped canvas. Finished with acrylic medium gloss glaze
Abstract Blue
If I could describe these in words, I would have been a poet. A selection of large scale abstracts. The Dance series have been done with the canvas on the floor, and using the artists feet to apply the paint. Others are reminiscent of Jackson Pollock with a splashes of paint on a blended abstract background.
Feminine Mystique
This body of work examines the abstractness and randomness of smoke. Inside each image something can be seen or interpreted from the layers of smoke.
Abstract #2
A gallery of more recent abstract paintings. With more vibrant colours and more experimental brushstrokes, and paint application techniques, these mark a new style development.
Event Horizon
The Event Horizon is is a collection of macro-photographic images of a single acrylic abstract painting. The images were displayed as part of the Redefining Materials exhibition 22 June to 6 July 2012, School of the Arts, Singapore. The body of work is primarily about the transformation of paint as medium to one used to create music. The work uses images to generate a musical composition in four movements. Each movement takes a different set of images, and using an algorithm designed and programmed by the artist, transforms them into a musical soundtrack without further input from the artist. The video can be seen here.
Cell
The macro-photographic abstract images in this gallery are obtained using a special technique that results in a dynamic somewhat organic ‘cell’ like or biological image.

Paul James
“Painting and capturing images with photography is a channel for the expression of my thoughts and moods. My paintings represent something that cannot be captured by photography, and I prefer that photography captures images that cannot otherwise be remembered.”
Paul James has been painting and capturing images through photography for over 15 years as a means of expressing his thoughts and moods, and maintaining his childhood fascination with the world. He prefers to paint images that cannot be captured with photography, and produce photographic images of things unseen.
Paul’s specialization is in large scale non-representative abstract paintings and photography that express dynamism, starkness and abstractness of life. He often has active closed eye hallucinations – random patterns, images and colour appear when his eyes are closed. This, along with his background in mathematics, electronics, music and computer programming are represented in some of his artworks.
