Memories and Solitude.
As part of SingaPlural 2016 (the anchor event of Singapore Design Week), visual artists Pang and Paul James will be presenting two new installations investigating concepts on memories and solitude through the application of sound and scent – two elements an individual can rarely shut out.
Directing their own independent art practices, this is the first collaboration between the two visual artists.
7 – 13 March 2016.
Minimart 4.0 Exhibition “Out of the lift”
“Out of the lift”
Exhibition 23rd 24th March 2013, The Substation Gallery, 45 Armenian Street, Singapore.
Paul James applies his background in mathematics, music and programming to create computer algorithms which create music scores from images or a video stream. Work in progress uses a video camera for the image acquisition and future work is ongoing to implement the system in real-time for live interactive music generation and sound installations.
The work bridges the areas of art, music and mathematics. The challenge works both ways: to produce a musical soundtrack from an image, or to produce an image that yields a musical soundtrack.

“Not All Things In Life Are Pretty”
This series of images examines the darker side of childhood and parenting, representing concepts of protection, smothering and elevation.
The series of photographs of a baby doll, posed and photographed by the artist is an expression of growing up as an only child, and the hints at the effect on adulthood. To the artist, the act of making this series is also reminder of his childhood in which is he was left alone to play and experiment. The tools have changed in adulthood, but the principle remains the same.
The body of work includes two sculptures, and audio interviews with four adults who grew up as an only child, and a video work.

“Painting and capturing images with photography is a channel for the expression of my thoughts and moods. My paintings represent something that cannot be captured by photography, and I prefer that photography captures images that cannot otherwise be remembered.”
Paul James has been painting and capturing images through photography for over 15 years as a means of expressing his thoughts and moods, and maintaining his childhood fascination with the world. He prefers to paint images that cannot be captured with photography, and produce photographic images of things unseen.
Paul’s specialization is in large scale non-representative abstract paintings and photography that express dynamism, starkness and abstractness of life. He often has active closed eye hallucinations – random patterns, images and colour appear when his eyes are closed. This, along with his background in mathematics, electronics, music and computer programming are represented in some of his artworks.
